   President's Message

In 2003, Goodwill Industries provided employment and training services to 701 individuals with disabilities or those who are vocationally disadvantaged. Forty-eight individuals were placed into competitive employment. The percentage of clients expressing satisfaction with their program remains high.

The work opportunities provided through the janitorial, industrial services, donated goods, switchboard operations, and food services continue to enable individuals to achieve their vocational goals.  The retail stores were more profitable in 2002.  The Industrial Services Department provided valuable work opportunities even though industry did not outsource as much work as compared to last year.  Funding restrictions due to the state budget has also impacted referrals.

The performance of the janitorial crews at the Federal Building, U.S. Courthouse, U.S. Courthouse Annex, Pleasant Hill City Hall, Pleasant Hill Youth Center, Vets Center, and the Navy Recruiting Office performed well and provided excellent work experiences in the community.  The switchboard operation at the Veterans Administration Center continues to perform well.  Two new NISH contracts were added this year - Saylorville Lake office and Adult Daycare at Vets Hospital.

In the public relations area, our programs enhance the education of the general public about our rehabilitation services.  The two television commercials, brochures, billboard, public service announcements, video, State Fair booth, tours, JWOD Week, and the Des Moines Mayor signing a proclamation, and speaking engagements have improved our image in the community.  The partnership with Younkers continued as 36,000 pounds of clothing was collected.  The second Goodwill Golf Classic was very successful.

Goodwill strives to tell the story of how we help individuals develop appropriate skills in order to become more independent.  In 2003, Goodwill will continue to provide excellent employment and training services that enable individuals to achieve a better quality of life.

Sincerely,
Marlyn McKeen
President
