WORK ADJUSTMENT: A service that determines an individual's vocational assets and liabilities in a work environment and assists the individual in understanding the meaning, value, and demands of work.  It changes or develops attitudes, personal characteristics, and work behaviors in order for the individual to maximize their vocational potential in either employment at Goodwill or supported/competitive employment in the community.  Goodwill counselors may use a number of different measuring instruments in order to assess physical capacities and mobility, mechanical reasoning, mechanical assembly, spatial aptitude, vocational interest and/or vocational awareness.  Individuals may be involved in situational assessments in the following areas: packaging, sub-assembly, sorting, machine operations, donated goods processing, food service, janitorial, and retail operations.

CAREERS IN BANKING: Careers In Banking is Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa’s newest program.  It provides up-to-date banking/financial industry skills training to qualified individuals.  The goal of CIB is to recruit, select, train and prepare individuals with physical, mental or vocational disadvantages for entry-level banking positions.  This program has an active Business Advisory Council (BAC) consisting of banking professionals who provide advice and direction.  Their role will be to review and approve the CIB curriculum, provide mock interviews and provide training facilities.  Our CIB training is divided into classes running six weeks.  Hard skills and soft skills are taught.  Follow-along job coaching is provided after placement.

 

FEDERAL AND PRIVATE CONTRACTS: Skills training services provided through contracts with the federal government.  Current contracts include janitorial services at the Federal Building, U.S. Courthouse, VA Day Care and Vets Center.  Goodwill also has a switchboard operation at the Vets Hospital.  Goodwill also has a food service worker contract with the Air National Guard.

 

SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT: A service to provide structured job placement, training, and long-term follow-up (on-going support) in order to maintain employment in a competitive work environment.  Goodwill will assist individuals to identify, obtain, and/or maintain employment matching with their vocational, social, psychological and medical needs, and their abilities.  In addition, services are made available to employers to facilitate the successful employment of individuals with disabilities or those who are vocationally disadvantaged.

 

DAY SERVICES: A service for persons with chronic mental illness that provides an opportunity for socialization, leisure training, community integration, educational training, and pre-vocational training. 

 

CASE MANAGEMENT: Case Management is a service provided to individuals with a disability who are eligible for Medicaid.  Case management is an individually focused process through which clients are assisted in identifying, securing, and sustaining resources necessary to live as independently as possible.

 

FOOD SERVICE TRAINING: A program that provides training in food preparation, serving food, dishwashing, and cash register training.

 

JANITORIAL TRAINING: A program that provides hands-on training in all aspects of janitorial work, including floor care.

 

RETAIL TRAINING:  A program that teaches skills necessary to work in a retail setting.

GIVS (Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services): A volunteer organization of men, women, and children who support the rehabilitation efforts of Goodwill Industries.  Members contribute their talents to enhance the services available for Goodwill participants.

 

PEOPLE SERVED:

Goodwill serves individuals with mental illness, mental retardation, vocational / economic disadvantages, physical disabilities, and traumatic brain injuries.  During 2005, Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa served 965 individuals with disabilities. 

 

FUNDING:  Goodwill accepts clients with a variety of funding sources:  Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, county of residence, Medicaid, Medicare, waiver programs, private pay, and school funding.
