Around here, we take Halloween seriously; we go all out and we have FUN. For the next month, our Facebook page will be a go-to for Halloween costume inspiration, great ideas for décor and shopping tips to get you set for the spookiest and kookiest of holidays.

We have not one, but two costume contests taking place this month, between our retail stores and headquarters departments. Starting on October 1 and continuing through October 31, our Facebook page will be updated daily with photos of our contestants for the 31 Days of Halloween challenge. The winner of each contest will be determined by number of likes, so check our page often to vote for your favorite. We hope you will be inspired by the creativity and ingenuity shown by our awesome Goodwill teams!

GET INSPIRED

Game of Thrones will be huge this Halloween, so we decided to take a stab at it. Aubrey, a Goodwill day services life instructor and our resident red head, was  game to be our Sansa Stark. Sourcing all of the components from our Johnston store and shopgoodwill.com, this costume came together in about 45 minutes.

Cost breakdown:

  • Dress: $6.19
  • Top: $3.89
  • Tablecloth (as her cloak): $1.19
  • Belt: $2.99
  • Jewelry: $7.59 (for all)
  • Coat: $17.00

Total: $38.85

We hate to brag, but we’re pretty sure we nailed it. Putting together this look for under $40 would be unheard of from another retailer, but at Goodwill, it’s how we do Halloween.

Aubrey’s costume is just a glimpse of the Halloween inspiration coming at you over the course of the next month. So stay tuned!

HAUNTING HOSTS

No Halloween party or gathering would be complete without great decorations. This tablescape is circus-themed (more to come on that) and everything seen here came from our Urbandale and Johnston stores. We used a mix of objects and serving wear to set the glam/creepy vibe we were going for. Using a limited color palette, like black and gold, makes decorations look cohesive. Hint: Get out your spray paint!

NO BASICS HERE

Shopping at Goodwill for Halloween allows you being creative without breaking the bank! We love the idea of building a costume around basic items, even ones you already own.

Start with a striped shirt for example, grab some face paint (we’ve got some in stores) and a beret: you’re a mime!

Or, add an eye patch, mustache, some tattoos and ahoy matey!

Face mask and money bag, you’re a robber on the run.

Goodwill stores are stocked up with great costumes and basics as well as make up kits, wigs, and other costume accessories in our new stock Halloween Shop.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
