Program Mission

To provide basic skills for the sector of the retail industry to individuals with barriers to employment, so they can gain work within this industry or related fields.

Program Overview

The retail training program is a seven week program. Classes are held at a Goodwill Industries retail store.

Methods of Instruction

The trainer models the skill and provides instruction, information, and examples. Clients practice the skills under simulated conditions that may be found in retail environments. While clients are rehearsing and practicing skills, the instructor provides feedback and repeats instruction, if needed.

Clients will focus on processing hard lines, pricing items, processing clothes, providing customer service and accepting donations.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in retail skills related to community-based employment: sales, merchandising, customer service, inventory control, presentation of items
  • Increase awareness of customer service skills
  • Increase knowledge of safety issues in this industry
  • Demonstrate understanding of employment readiness skills
  • Demonstrate understanding of job retention skills
  • Program graduates will receive an interview with Goodwill for open positions for which you qualify

Requirements for Course Completion:

  • Be able to pass a background check
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Possess an interest in retail and the unique requirements of the job
  • Possess an ability to provide good customer service
