Finding Your Style!

Meet Haley. She is one of our Recruiters at Goodwill of Central Iowa. And she looooves to thrift! This entire outfit is thrifted from our local Goodwill locations.

When I thrift, I mainly look for things that are my style or a little out of my comfort zone. I like to push myself to wear things I might not normally do. When I do that, I tend to like that style a lot, which is a great feeling! I particularly like looking for Levi’s jeans, sweaters, workout tops, books, and furniture. All things I find while thrifting, I can make more of my own.”

It’s important to have an open mind when thrifting. Don’t be afraid to explore different sections of the store and try on items that you wouldn’t normally wear. This is a great way to discover what styles speak to you and make you feel confident! When it comes to thrifting outfits, it’s best to start with a statement piece and build your outfit around it. For example, if you find a boldly patterned blazer, you can pair it with a simple white t-shirt, high-waisted jeans, and black ankle boots for a chic and effortless look.

“There are so many great finds for a more affordable price when thrifting. When thrifting at Goodwill, I know the money goes to a great cause and I am able to partake in the reduction of landfill waste by fighting fast fashion. All of these things are important to me, so it’s the best option for myself”, says Haley.

Not a Waisted Effort.

Knowing your size is essential in creating the perfect thrifted wardrobe. If you don’t know your measurements, a few hacks help you determine if something will fit (without trying it on). For example, Haley used this hack to ensure her pants fit her.

I prefer not to try on clothes at the store. So, when I need to find pants that fit me best without going to the dressing room, I do a little hack that I was taught! Take the outside edge of the waistband and bring one edge to your belly button and the other edge wrapped around to your back. You know they will fit if the waistband touches your belly button AND your spine.”

Accessorize.

Accessories are a key part of any outfit, and thrifting is a great way to find unique and affordable pieces. Look for vintage jewelry, hats, and bags to add some extra flair to your outfit.

The right accessories can elevate a simple outfit and add that extra touch of personality. Whether it’s a statement necklace, a bold pair of earrings, or a colorful scarf, accessories allow you to express yourself and showcase your unique style. They can also help you transition your outfit from day to night or from casual to formal. And when it comes to thrifting, accessories are a perfect way to add some extra flair to your outfit without breaking the bank.

Thrifting outfits is a great way to create unique and fashionable looks on a budget. With an open mind, a little creativity, and some alterations, you can turn thrifted items into stylish and sustainable fashion statements that are special to YOU!
