Communication is a fundamental aspect of human interaction, but it’s not easy for everyone. For people with barriers of intellectual disabilities, this can be a significant challenge and something that most non-disabled people don’t have to worry about. Interpersonal communication requires a combination of language, cognitive function, and social skills, many of which can be hard for people with the barrier of an intellectual disability.
Jill’s journey to success was driven by her determination to find the support and resources she needed to thrive. Traveling through various programs across multiple towns, she remained determined to find the one that would not only embrace her for who she was but also empower her to develop the essential skills she needed to succeed.
Her Journey at Goodwill
Jill’s personalized care team determined she’d be an excellent fit for Goodwill’s Day Services Program. The Day Services Program is a comprehensive program accredited by CARF that focuses on developing essential life skills for those with disability barriers. Life skills range from emotional management, communication, healthy living habits, money management, and many more that support everyday life.
After joining the Day Services Program, Jill’s personalized care team identified her need for emotional regulation and interpersonal communication support. By designing activities and lessons that catered to her specific needs, she grasped effective communication techniques and responded appropriately to her peers and surroundings. Some of these activities led her to enjoy volunteering with new friends she made in the Day Services Program.
“I look forward to being with my friends. Everybody’s nice to me, and I’ve learned how to make new friends. We go to Meals on Wheels and hand out meals to everyone,” said Jill.
After coming to Goodwill, Jill has found a passion for volunteering and helping those in need. She has natural leadership skills that have been nurtured and developed through her experiences at Goodwill.
“She has a keen eye for detail and organization and likes to keep people on task. She’s learning how to be a leader without being bossy,” said Breanna Holland, her Day Services Instructor.
Jill’s Success
With the help of Goodwill’s personalized care team, Jill received the support she needed to succeed. Goodwill’s care teams are devoted to providing tailored care and attention to each participant, acknowledging their unique needs and aspirations. This individualized approach not only makes each participant feel valued and understood, but it also empowers them to carve their own path to success, just like Jill did.
“Thanks to Goodwill, my daughter Jill has grown in her actions with others and has learned several new skills. Goodwill gives her something to look forward to each day, and the fun things that you do and go to are the BEST! Jill tells me Goodwill takes her places she would never be able to go to. She has lived in many places, but now we have found a good place for her in Des Moines. They keep her busy and help her not get bored and sit at home with nothing to do. Going to Goodwill is wonderful and makes me and her siblings very happy. I am so happy when my daughter is happy; this is what every parent wants for their child,” said Linda, Jill’s mother.
Furthering Goodwill’s Mission
“During Jill’s time at Goodwill, she has made friends, became a leader to her peers, and developed a more positive attitude. Jill has a great sense of humor that makes the group laugh several times a day. We enjoy having Jill be a part of the program,” said Jill Hagen, her Life Instructor.
With a personalized care plan from her dedicated Goodwill care team, she embarked on a transformative journey. Today, Jill radiates optimism, displays improved manners, has created new friendships, and has learned to lead without being controlling.
Her story demonstrates the power of one person’s dedication and positivity, inspiring those around her to believe that with the right support, anyone can achieve great things.
