Every now and then, a business can run into a problem that an internal team may not be able to solve. Knowing who or where to go when this happens can be a challenge in itself. One area that can trip up any good Human Resources team is finding and hiring great candidates. If your business is located in Goodwill of Central Iowa’s 22-county region, we can be that resource. Although we can’t solve every issue of employment, we have two major ways we help: a large pool of candidates to choose from and plenty of diversity.

1. Access to a Larger Group of Qualified Candidates
When adding to your staff, you usually have to prepare for a fairly lengthy process from deciding what positions are needed and what responsibilities they will hold to collecting resumes and conducting interviews. It can take a lot of time and resources to weed through all the people who apply, hoping the great ones stick out. Wouldn’t it be nicer to have access to candidates who’ve already been evaluated, well trained, and are ready & willing to work? The pool of candidates you’ll find with Goodwill is just that. We’ve taken the time to discover their strengths and prepare them for working in various establishments through paid hands-on and classroom training.
We help people facing barriers to employment gain the skills and support needed for successful long-term community employment. A fact many people don’t realize is that people with disabilities make up the nation’s largest minority and the only one that anyone can be a part of at any time. You also won’t find a more eager group of individuals who are ready to put their skills to work.
People facing barriers, including disabilities, transportation barriers, criminal backgrounds, language barriers and more could turn into your best employees. They just need to be given a chance.
2. Create a More Diverse Workforce
A study done by Forbes showed that having a more inclusive team within your business can improve decision making by 87% and decisions can be made up to 2X faster with ½ the number of meetings.
But according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2 million jobs went unfilled in 2019 while 600,000 willing people were released from prison or jail. One of our specific programs, Creating Excellence in Re-Entry (CEiR), provides soft-skills training and certifications to help both the participants and businesses with better opportunities in the workforce.
It can be hard to not only find diversity but well-qualified diverse candidates. Our programs are well-suited for a variety of individuals that help fill the needs of businesses like yours. Your customers also take notice of diversity – these customers hold the same standards as all customers (quality and competitive pricing) but they also look to feel valued as a customer by seeing employees similar to themselves in a place of business. These customers make up more than $200 billion in discretionary spending, according to the National Organization on Disability.
Employing a diverse workforce has been proven to increase team morale, improve culture, and create a more favorable brand image.
Goodwill of Central of Iowa strives to give individuals the best training and preparation to help them learn light fulfillment and assembly tasks as well as other skills like food service and catering services so your core team can focus on their top priorities.
